History

Downtown Fargo has a vibrant history and Roberts Commons is no exception.

1888

The Columbia Hotel opened October 1, 1888 and featured 100 electric lighted, steam heated, and superbly furnished rooms. Five years after opening, it was lost in the Great Fire of 1893.

1903

The ruins of the Columbia Hotel stood at the site for a decade, as did much of the entire block, until the location became the site of Fargo’s first public library, the Fargo Carnegie Library. The library opened January 26, 1903 and served the community until it was torn down in 1970 to create surface parking.

2018

When an old structure no longer supports its original purpose or a lot sits vacant, it takes thoughtful engagement to reveal its latent potential. In 2018, 455 parking spaces, 250 bike parking spaces, 72 apartments, and 8 retail spaces began serving the Fargo community at Roberts Street and 2nd Ave. Together, they form Roberts Commons.
